1. Overview
At Abroad, we believe in open innovation and global collaboration. Our licensing model ensures that students, researchers, and nonprofit organizations can benefit from our work at no cost, while businesses using our software commercially contribute to its continued development and security.
The Abroad Open Source License v1.0 (AOSL-1.0) is based on the GNU General Public License v3 (GPL-3.0) with additional restrictions on commercial use.
2. DefinitionsFor the purposes of this License:
- "Abroad Software" means any software, source code, scripts, libraries, APIs, or documentation released under this license by Abroad Financial Technologies Ltd.
- "You" or "Your" means any individual or entity using the Abroad Software.
- "Non-Commercial Use" means use of the software solely for educational, academic, or internal research purposes, without generating direct or indirect revenue.
- "Commercial Use" means any use of the software that:
- Generates revenue directly or indirectly;
- Is integrated into a paid product or service;
- Is used in a SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) or cloud environment with commercial purposes;
- Is carried out by a for-profit entity beyond purely internal, non-revenue-generating research.
3. Free Use – Non-Commercial License
You may use Abroad Software free of charge if all of the following conditions are met:
✔ You are a student, researcher, or nonprofit organization;
✔ Your use is purely non-commercial;
✔ Any modifications you make are released under the same AOSL-1.0 license and made publicly available;
✔ You retain the original copyright and license notices.
4. Commercial Use Requires a Paid License
A Commercial License is required if:
❌ You integrate Abroad Software into a product or service for sale;
❌ You use Abroad Software within a paid SaaS or hosted platform;
❌ Your business generates revenue — directly or indirectly — from the software;
❌ You distribute modified versions of the software for commercial purposes.
Unlicensed commercial use is a breach of this Agreement and may result in legal action, including but not limited to injunctions, damages, and recovery of attorney’s fees where permitted by law.

6. Distribution and Modifications
If you modify or redistribute Abroad Software, you must:
- Release your modifications under the AOSL-1.0 license;
- Include the original copyright and license notices;
- Clearly indicate that your version is not an official Abroad release;
- Obtain a Commercial License before distributing modified versions for commercial purposes.
7. Warranty Disclaimer & Limitation of Liability7.1. Warranty Disclaimer
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.
7.2. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Abroad Financial Technologies Ltd shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages arising out of or in connection with the use or inability to use the software, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
8. Termination
- This license terminates automatically if you violate its terms.
- Upon termination, you must immediately cease all use and distribution of Abroad Software.
- Abroad reserves the right to modify this License in future versions of the software, with changes applying only to later releases.
9. Protection Against Anti-Circumvention Laws
No covered work shall be deemed part of an effective technological measure under any law implementing Article 11 of the WIPO Copyright Treaty (adopted on December 20, 1996) or similar laws.
When you convey a covered work, you waive any legal power to forbid circumvention of technological measures, to the extent such circumvention is carried out while exercising rights under this License.
